Glass and ceramics graduates debut at the National Glass Centre
Emerging artists from the
University of Sunderland’s BA (Hons)
Glass and Ceramics degree course will be making their debut this June with
their degree show at Sunderland’s National
Glass Centre. The show features the work of 18 final year
students, who have used glass and ceramics to express themselves in a world of
visual and tactile art. It represents
the culmination of three years of hard work and learning. The range of work
shows the great diversity of glass and ceramics and a wide range of techniques
have been used to create the pieces including glass blowing, glass casting and
fusing in kilns, sandblasting, water-jet cutting, wheel throwing, glazing and
printing.
The exhibition shows a diverse range of ideas and themes including expressive sculptures of the human form, pieces inspired by dancing with glass, memories of the illusive ‘perfect day’ and the notion of fragility expressed through intricate powdered glass pattern. For those who get their culture fix by following new makers at the cutting edge of applied art, this event is a must.
“Glass & Ceramics 2014” opens with a Private View night for VIP guests on Friday 6th June and runs for two weeks until Sunday 15th June. The show is the culmination of three years practical and academic art study on an internationally-renowned degree course. Glass and ceramic artists the world over recognise the reputation of Sunderland as a centre of learning and glass research. As well as BA (Hons) Glass & Ceramics undergraduates the NGC is also home to Foundation Art and Design students and those studying for MAs, MPhils and PhDs, full and part-time.
The university’s high teaching standards and facilities are internationally recognised and supported by an enviable range of specialist equipment (including advanced water-jet cutting facilities and one of the world’s largest glass casting kilns). Its teaching and research programmes also include exploring the potential of ceramics alongside glass. This has helped position the university as the foremost provider of glass and ceramics education, training and research in the UK.
Professor Kevin Petrie, the University of Sunderland’s Glass & Ceramics Team Leader and BA (Hons) Programme Leader said: “Even though most of the students are at the start of their artistic careers, their pieces already demonstrate an exciting measure of technique, creativity and professionalism. Using glass and ceramics as a contemporary craft material, their work conveys original expression, coupled with a diversity of ideas and concepts. This exhibition offers students the chance to showcase their talents in a real gallery space.”
There will be a Private View at the National Glass Centre on Friday 6th June, from 6 pm until 8 pm. Invited guests will be welcomed by renowned glass artist and senior lecturer Colin Rennie. The show then opens to the public on Saturday 7th June and runs until Sunday 15th June. One of the show’s primary aims is for students to gain experience and recognition in a professional contemporary environment, but work will also be available to buy during this period.
