What sort of artist am I?

I will be setting up in premises on the A68 (north of Hexham) in late 2015 with a studio and workshop.  The A68 is one of the main tourist trails in Northumberland, in close proximity to Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall. I will be located just an hour’s drive from key tourist locations like Alnwick, Cragside and Bamburgh Castle.

I worked in tourism before my degree, piloting ‘art holidays’ with accommodation providers, tourism associations and the County Council.  There are numerous B&Bs, self-catering cottages, hotels and TICs in the vicinity, so I plan to develop and promote bespoke creative breaks and simple, fun, short-course workshops for visitors. These would offer the opportunity to make glass art using a number of techniques, such as stained glass, mosaics, glass painting, silk-screen printing, fusing, slumping and kiln-forming. I intend to market my courses direct to individuals and tourism businesses, online using my own website and social media; and also via key tourism sites.

In conjunction with this, I plan to create art and craft at the affordable end of the gift market; but would like to produce higher value work for larger galleries, in Hexham, Corbridge, Newcastle and Durham. Other outlets will include:
  • Tourist Information Centres (TICs)
  • Visitor Attraction Gift Shops
  • Craft Shops
  • Corporate Gifts & Trophies
